March 11, 2012 at 12:50 AM

When the US Food and Drug Administration told the makers of cholesterol-lowering statins to add new side effect warnings to their labels last week, many of the 40 million statin users may have been unaware that there were real risks associated with these drugs that have been touted by some cardiologists to be safer than aspirin.

SOPA Still Stings: Wikipedia Officially Ditches GoDaddy
March 11, 2012 at 12:45 AM

It feels like it's been forever since the SOPA debate dominated headlines. That particular discussion largely subsided after an unprecedented show of Web-fueled outrage forced members of Congress to rethink their support for the controversial anti-piracy legislation. Before the anti-SOPA blackout, there was the backlash against GoDaddy, which stuck out like a sore thumb as the only prominent Internet company on the list of SOPA supporters.

March 10, 2012 at 11:36 PM

Obama: Politician-in-Chief

In an interview with Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic, Obama said Republican critiques are part of “the usual politics” in an election year and condescendingly added, “These aren't video games that we're playing here.” Tough accusations. Senator John McCain thinks they cross a line. “I have never seen a president deal in personal character attacks the way that this president does,” he told me last week. “That can only mean that he's insecure about his position. He does not have the experience or knowledge on these issues so he resorts to these personal comments or attacks.â

London: A City Under Olympic Siege
March 10, 2012 at 9:44 PM

Iain Sinclair's "Ghost Milk: Calling Time on the Grand Project" is a kneecapping of the dreams of the 2012 London Olympic development. It's not an exposé so much as an eyewitness account of what it means to be on the ground, on the periphery, when government and private big money collaborate to reshape a large chunk of a city. Blue fences obstructing public walkways and security guards who won't let people take pictures. Old buried thorium disturbed by construction and coming out in the water table. Dubious land deals and suspicious finances. Critically panned architecture and excessive s

Smaller crowds challenge Putin after Russia poll
March 10, 2012 at 9:42 PM

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Thousands of Russians chanting "Time for change" challenged Vladimir Putin's presidential election victory on Saturday but their numbers were far fewer than in previous weeks. People who demonstrated in bright sunshine in central Moscow waved flags, balloons and banners and wore white ribbons, the symbol of protests that began three months ago. Echoing chants from previous rallies, they shouted "Russia without Putin". "The road will be long and hard, it will be no quick struggle, but we will do it all. ...

The Dirty Thirty - March 2012 Edition
March 10, 2012 at 9:11 PM

On March 14, 2011 we first published a list of thirty pieces of Republican legislation "that Republicans are using to destroy America" and called it "The Dirty Thirty." That original list has been updated several times and grown significantly although the list is incomplete, given there have been a thousand bills alone restricting a woman's right to abortion. If most of the laws directed toward Women's Reproductive Rights seem petty and punitive, well…they are. In fact, the goal of Republican legislation seems increasingly to be this: to punish the rest of us for not being like t

BEIRUT (Reuters) - U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan meets President Bashar al-Assad on Saturday to press for a political solution to Syria's year-long uprising and bloody crackdown in which thousands of people have been killed.
